Annual Salary:                   £12.60 per hour
Hours:                                  Casual 8-12 hours per week with a view to move to contracted

Responsible to Leisure Services Manager


We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Female Gym Instructor to join the Zest Leisure team. You’ll play a key role in supporting our local community by working across both our main gym and dedicated Women Only Gym, helping to create a welcoming, empowering environment for customers of all backgrounds.

Purpose of Job

To work as an integral member of the Zest Leisure team by assessing, planning, supervising, and supporting individuals and groups using Zest gym facilities. To help people, to build confidence, develop the skills needed to exercise safely and effectively, and to encourage regular physical activity that positively impacts their overall health and well-being.

Main Responsibilities and Duties

  • Supervise and assist all customers using Zest gym and fitness facilities, ensuring their safety, comfort and enjoyment at all times.
  • Deliver comprehensive gym inductions for customers, ensuring safe, confident and informed use of equipment.
  • Assess fitness levels, plan tailored exercise programmes, and provide ongoing support to help individuals achieve their health and well-being goals.
  • Offer motivation, encouragement, and expert guidance to help customers build confidence and maintain regular physical activity.
  • Ensure full compliance with Zest’s normal and emergency operating procedures, as well as all health & safety, safeguarding and EDI requirements.
  • Respond to accidents and emergencies, providing basic first aid where required, and completing accurate incident reports in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment, with regular cleaning of equipment and the gym area.
  • Prepare areas for any programmed activities such as fitness classes
  • Monitor equipment usage, carry out routine checks, and report any defects or hazards promptly.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records relating to inductions, individual progress, incidents and customer feedback.
  • Actively engage with customers to gather feedback, respond to complaints, and pass relevant information to the management team.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to help develop flexible, inclusive and customer-focused services that meet community needs.
  • Liaise with Duty Managers to ensure safe staffing levels and effective use of equipment and facilities.
  • To contribute to the implementation of the Zest Health and Safety Policy, including undertaking Health and safety checks, procedures and risk assessments as required
  • To undertake training and other development activity in line with organisational and personal development needs.
  • Undertake any other duties as agreed with the Line Manager.
  • Carry out all duties and responsibilities as described in line with ZEST policies and procedures, with particular attention to those relating to Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety and Data Protection.

Person Specification

  • Essential Qualifications and skills
  • Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-based Exercise) or equivalent
  • Experience working with individuals or groups in a fitness or leisure environment
  • Good knowledge of health and safety in a gym or leisure setting
  • Ability to work a flexible shift pattern including evenings and weekends

Desirable Qualifications

  • Current First Aid at Work certificate (or willingness to obtain)
  • Awareness of safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Personal Training or equivalent
  • Level 2 Exercise Referral or experience supporting individuals with health conditions
  • Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults (training will be provided if not already held)
  • Experience delivering group exercise sessions
  • Experience working in a community-based or inclusive setting
  • National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)

An enhanced DBS check will be required for this post.
